Entomologist Justin Schmidt used his interest in insects to create a pain index that measures the painfulness of insect bites. In order to create the pain index, he actually let various insects bite him, as did his colleagues. The pain index is a 1-4 scale, with 1 being the least painful insect bite (like a fire ant), and 4 being the most painful insect bite (like a tarantula hawk wasp).
