Patterns found on the shells of Namib dessert beetles can prevent frost from forming on car windshields, Virginia Polytechnic Institute scientists have found. They copied the shell patterns and put them on a silicon wafer in a process called photolithography. Water droplets will not join together on the material so it slows or even halts the process of frost formation.
